Inspired by Zen Koans, spiritual and philosophical challenges posed by Zen Masters to their students, the Martial Mind Power (MMP) Koans within this book are intended to help you overcome the obstacles within your conscious mind and discover your true authentic highest self.  This book contains 382 easy-to-read MMP Koans spread over 750 pages (it is just over 2 inches thick, an absolute bible of a book) across 55 compelling chapters signifying key areas of daily life for self-realisation and conscious living.

The mind is a gateway between the body and spirit, and when you can fully cultivate and harness its power by using the martial mindset embodied within these MMP Koans, you can start to self-realise and live your Original Truth.

Who is This Book For and What Pain Does it Help You Replace With Pleasure?

This book is for the non-martial artist as much as it is for the martial artist. Whether you are a Bruce Lee fan, a martial philosopher or simply a martial arts and action movie buff.

If you love practising martial arts and have focussed mainly on physical cultivation rather than mental and spiritual cultivation using the Martial Mind Power Koans that are seldom taught, and have not Learn how to apply them to your life, then this book is for you.

If you love practising Zen, mindfulness and meditation for self-awareness, self-peace, or to attain a higher state of consciousness, then this book is for you.

What is the Objective?

This book contains inspirational philosophical and spiritual teachings influenced by martial arts, packaged into Zen Koan style teachings and gifted to you by the author, Lak Loi.  Loi calls these Martial Mind Power (MMP) Koans.

This book is born from Loi’s own personal journey of cultivating body, mind and spirit using mindfulness, meditation and martial arts, having seen the light and attained self-realisation.  This book is designed to help guide you towards a higher state of consciousness.

Loi’s idea of writing his experiences into MMP Koans was inspired by Zen Koans from the School of Rinzai, a sect of Zen Buddhism. Zen Koans are designed to convey an illumined experience through such wisdom and associated practices, which Loi felt to be the most effective way to communicate such experiential teachings.

Zen Koans are spiritual and philosophical challenges posed by Zen Masters, or ‘Zenji’ (living master) or ‘Roshi’ (revered master), to their students, which are to be meditated upon to abandon conscious reasoning and make way for unconscious intuitive enlightenment using no-mindedness or ‘Mu’.

There are many Zen Koans, differing by school. Zen students discover the enlightened teaching embodied within each Zen Koan, which helps the student attain ‘Satori’ or enlightenment.  This is followed by ‘Kensho’, meaning ‘seeing your essential nature’ or self-realisation. A Zen student is considered enlightened when he understands all the Zen Koans and/or eventually transcends his spiritual teachings by creating a Zen Koan of his own that is recognised by a Zen Master.

Zen Koans come in the form of a short quote (the title of each chapter, in this book’s case) usually presented as a riddle.  When approached with a logical, rational, dualistic mindset, they often appear abstract, obscure and meaningless.  However, in Zen Koans, there is no duality, for there is no right or wrong, black or white, good or bad, and so on.

It just is.  A oneness.  Everything and nothing all at the same time.

How Do You Use the MMP Koans?

To challenge yourself, take one section and read the MMP Koan (i.e. the title of the section only), sit peacefully in a quiet place and just be one with it. The continuous pondering of a MMP Koan that leads to a breakthrough in understanding is known as the ‘Shokan’ or ‘Hua Tou’. Notice how your mind and spirit start to expand into a higher state of being during this contemplation. Then, when you think you understand the teaching, read the explanation in the chapter body.

Loi truly believes the mind is a gateway between the body and the spirit, and when we can fully cultivate and harness that power using the martial mindset embodied within these MMP Koans, we can start to self-realise and live our Original Truth. That is what Loi calls Martial Mind Power.

Wishing you all the best on your Martial Journey.

1. Pick one MMP Koan from a chapter that addresses the area you want some clarity in
3. Let the subtle messages come to you
2. Sit peacefully in a quiet place, read the MMP Koan, and just 'be with it'
4. Read the 'Essential Food' for further clarification (MMP Koan text body)

The Art of Thinking Without Thinking book will guide you through each spiritual teaching provided in the MMP Koans.

What is The Art of Thinking Without Thinking?

In the West, we are taught to use a rational and logical mindset, to break things down into the smallest unit so we can understand the whole.  This is a reductionist atomised way of thinking, which diverts us away from our intuition, making it seem unintelligible.

Think of 10,000 pieces of a Ferrari laid out on a garage floor.  At first sight it may not be obvious what it is, and most certainly it will be difficult to imagine what it looks like when fully assembled.  But when the pieces of the Ferrari are eventually assembled and you open the door, slide into the sumptuous leather driving seat, press the steely cold starter button, hear the engine roar to life, listen to it purr as it idles eagerly, clasp the leather steering wheel, slot it into gear and drive it, you realise a Ferrari is much more than a car.  It is an immersive emotive experience that gives you much more than simply transporting you from A to B.  It is an exciting, entertaining, adrenaline-inducing, mind-warping, orchestral driving experience.  It is an experience that cannot be described by just examining the 10,000 pieces laid out on a garage floor.  As they say, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.  Likewise, a Zen Koan is not just a collection of words with a logical meaning or outcome.  You have to adopt a holistic mindset, and practise ‘not thinking’ or ‘Mu-shin’ (no-mindedness), to allow the intuitive experience to happen ‘To You, Through You’.

This only happens when you vacate space in the stillness to let the intuition in; when you are totally relaxed without attachment to an answer or outcome and just let it come to you.

That is why this book is called The Art of Thinking Without Thinking, because no effort is required.  And that is the hard part: not doing anything, just being.  Our conscious minds naturally try to overcomplicate things.  We have to allow our critical faculties to move aside to allow us to step into our unconscious, and to do this we have to learn how to sit in ‘Zazen’, or deep meditation.

Descartes adopted the Western logical way of thinking when he said:

‘I think,
Therefore I am.’

But it was Buddha who said:

'I think,
Therefore I am,
But no thinker to be found,’

alluding to adopting the holistic mindset of The Art of Thinking Without Thinking.  Zen Masters often help their students by guiding them with clues or nudges called Essential Food.  This book not only contains MMP Koans, but plenty of Essential Food to feed your mind and spirit.

If there is a God, he is within.  You don't ask God to give you things, you depend on God for your inner theme.

bruce lee

So I dare you to go within an discover your inner God, and become it through practising the divine insights you receive by going through the MMP Koans within this book.

Gandhi summed it up beautifully when he described the process of BEcoming as:

God cannot be realised through the intellect.  Intellect can lead one to a certain extent and no further.  It is a matter of faith, an experience derived from that faith.

gandhi

Self-realisation is therefore a process of Cultivating your mind and spirit by looking within.

There is nothing to try to do, for whatever comes up moment by moment is accepted, including non-acceptance.

bruce lee

To achieve this, this will Take a lot of practice but without trying, and when tackled using a martial mind-set, mindfulness and meditation, it is what I call The Art of Thinking Without Thinking.

Does This Book Suit Your Martial Arts Style, System or Method?

Bruce Lee famously quoted:

‘I have not invented a "new style," composite, modified or otherwise that is set within distinct form as apart from "this" method or "that" method. On the contrary, I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds.’

In keeping with Lee’s philosophy, Loi uses a ‘Style of No Style’ to connect with all and every martial artist and human being. Loi has used universal principles and philosophies which he has identified as the commonalities between all styles, systems and methods, to throw away boundaries and Bring together martial artists and people interested in martial philosophy to help you grow and prosper.

Loi believes that this is what Bruce would have wanted, and he has stayed trued to this virtue in Master Your Life. In Bruce’s own words:

‘When one has reached maturity in the art, one will have a formless form. It is like ice dissolving in water. When one has no form, one can be all forms; when one has no style, he can fit in with any style.’

What Inspired Lak Loi to Write This Book For You?

What inspired me was Bruce Lee on the big-screen when I was a little child. The only way I’d sit still and eat my meals as a young child of three or four years old was when my parents put on a Bruce Lee movie…and I just sat there, mesmerised.

Later in life, in 2003, I nearly lost everything — I lost my job, my home and found out my wife was pregnant all at the same time. It was both the happiest and scariest day of my life - jobless, homeless, a new father to be with another mouth to feed.

I also found the ‘rat race’ to be dysfunctional, egotistical, dehumanising, apathetic, spiritually dead, unfulfilling and meaningless. I had a realisation that the City and Wall Street helped me make a living, but did not help me Make a life. But my life changed when I found one of Bruce Lee's Kung Fu schools in Manhattan to keep me strong and focussed, to help me keep going for my family.

Through hard training and perseverance over the next decade I cultivated my own mind, body and spirit and earned the accolade of becoming a third generation instructor in Bruce Lee's martial art and philosophy, a Personal Development, Elite Fitness Coach and achieved my personal success goals.

During my process of self-mastery I started to connect the dots and transcend my own learnings. Thats when I decided I had an obligation to share this gift of self-mastery with you, so I can help you to Transform your life towards your own end desires.

I call it Martial Mind Power and the outcome of the journey… self-realisation.

What People are Saying...

Don Green, Executive Director, The Napoleon Hill Foundation, America's Largest Personal Development Organisation, Founded by Dr Napoleon Hill, Bestselling Author of Think and Grow Rich

"Lak Loi has been deeply inspired by Bruce Lee, and discovered how Lee was inspired by Dr. Napoleon Hill's famous book, Think and Grow Rich when Mr Loi made the connection that Bruce had set himself a 'Definite Chief Aim' based on Dr Hill's philosophical works.

Mr Loi realised that the premise of Lee's success was built on a mindset instilled by Dr. Hill's famous philosophy, 'what the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve'.This gave birth to Mr Loi's concept of using the Martial Mindset inspired by Lee combined with Mind Power inspired by Dr Hill, which led him to coin the term Martial Mind Power. Mr Loi takes the reader through nine steps to self-mastery, to allow you to determine your success in life.

Each one of you has Martial Mind Power to discipline your mind and body to cultivate your self-mastery.

If you do not learn to take this power back, your life will be controlled by external forces leading to your misguided misery. I urge you to read this book and then apply Mr Loi's Martial Mind Power teachings in order to cultivate your self-mastery, to live the life you dream of.

Tim Tackett, First Generation Instructor in Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do and Original Member of the Bruce Lee Education Foundation

"Lak is the leading authority on the application of Bruce Lee’s teachings for personal development
and has truly transcended Kung Fu in his unique way. He has pioneered the use of Bruce Lee’s Kung Fu
to use martial movement to help Move the Mind to Move You Towards Your Own Abundance."

Andrew J. Staton, Jun Fan Journal Columnist for Martial Arts Illustrated Magazine and Authority in Bruce Lee's Legacy

"Jeet Kune Do was the name Bruce Lee gave to his way of martial arts training whilst in Los Angeles, before this he had taught a style called Jun Fan Gung Fu (literally Bruce Lee’s Gung Fu which was adapted from the Wing Chun Style of Kung Fu). But in the late 1960’s he wanted to free his students of style, system and method and never meant Jeet Kune Do to be a Martial Art, but more the process by which the student could liberate themselves from the limitations which traditional Martial Arts had.

To this aim Bruce taught his students to be mentally & physically strong. These days the physical element is still the easiest to be taught, but the development of Mind Power using the Martial Mindset is still weak in some areas where ever Bruce Lee’s combat philosophy is being developed. Like all JKD instructors they must develop their own teaching skills, to let their students grow in such a way that they can accept knowledge, without limiting themselves on growth or being bound by technique or style.

Lak has seen the freedom in releasing the mind from day to day restraints and passing on his passion by inspiring, educating and empowering his students, so that they can live their lives to their truest potential and align themselves towards their personal liberation, self-actualization and achieve their personal success goals... which was Bruce Lee’s main aim. Lak calls this... Martial Mind Power.

This book goes beyond its initial target and sets out a self-discipline guide for ALL who become dedicated to cultivating their own Self-Mastery."

"Jeet Kune Do is just a name, do not bother with it, it is the individual and limitless growth that is the true expression of life. Lak is a great signpost towards this direction and this book is but one of his signposts!"

Chris Kent, First Generation Instructor in Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do and Author of Liberate Yourself - A Guide to Personal Freedom

"If you are sincerely interested in discovering (or perhaps re-discovering) your real self, actualizing your true potential, and living life to the fullest, then Master Your Life is a must-read.

Combining many of the philosophical principles and concepts utilized by the legendary martial artist, Bruce Lee in his own process of personal liberation with up-to-date research concerning knowledge and learning as well as modern training principles and processes, Lak Loi has masterfully distilled an encyclopedic wealth of knowledge and information about personal growth and development into a single, action equals results-oriented book.
