Kintsugi (金継ぎ, “golden joinery”), also known as Kintsukuroi (金繕い, “golden repair”), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique.
As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, which beatifies it rather than something to disguise and cover up an ugly breakage.
My father once told me,
When a mirror is broken, it won’t be the same again.
In life, the mirror of our illusions can break anytime (because it is not real), when someone breaks our heart, our trust and confidence, our values and beliefs.
The art of Kintsugi reminds us, that when something breaks, such as a relationship, a venture, or a material belonging, it is not necessarily the end or permanent. Rather, it is an opportunity to learn and grow and reveal the gold and richness within, to make it more beautiful and better than before… should you decide to.
