Meditation is Medication

Did you know that Bruce Lee was paralysed for 3 months, and bed-ridden for 6 months following a ‘good morning’ weight-lifting exercise that went horribly wrong.  Doctors told him that he would never be able to partake in martial arts, let alone kick and punch again. During his time being bound to his bed, Bruce used that time wisely (it’s not as if he was going anywhere) to meditate himself back to health, coming back  Stronger than ever!  That all started in the mind, because he was so determined to prove the doctors wrong, and more importantly he believed he could so he did.

It has been scientifically proven that meditation changes the neuroplastic behaviour of the brain, increasing the grey matter concentration within the left hippocampus, the posterior cingulate cortex, the temporal-parietal junction and the cerebellum; brain regions which are involved in learning, memory, emotion regulation, sense of self and perspective taking. This all leads to an increased level of awareness and non-judging.  Please checkout Chapter 1 – Stillness of my book, Master Your Life for more information and references to studies in this field.

As well as improvements in brain function, there have been countless scientific studies into the effect of the  Mind over matter, take Bruce’s story as a living example.  I like to say:

‘If you don’t mind,

It doesn’t matter.’

The placebo effect is the most famously known ‘mind over matter’ effect, where medical practitioners trick your mind to  believe the medicine will heal you  (or should I say ‘sugar pill’), and so it is.  The key point is that…  you believe it will.

On the same token, if the mind can heal the body, then the mind can also create the ‘dis-ease’ (pronounced ‘dis’ and ‘ease’, i.e. without comfort).  ‘Dis-ease’ is usually asymptomatic, i.e. an affect of an illness in the mind such as a prevalent deep-rooted negative emotion (for example fear, guilt, jealousy, hate, anger, sadness, frustration, shame, grief, despair, doubt, etc), showing up externally on the body as a reminder something needs to be healed within.  Our bodies are just like car dashboards, when something is wrong ‘within’ the car, it flashes up on the dashboard such as low engine oil, low fuel, or engine overheating.

What is your dashboard (i.e. your body) trying to tell you?  Are you aware of any ‘dis-ease’ you are creating in your body right now?  Do you plan on re-thinking a different outcome?  Have you tried to  Medicate yourself with meditation ?
