The student asked the Zen Master, can you teach me. The Zen Master said to the student,
“I have nothing to teach you.
I have nothing to sell you.”
The student asks,
‘What are all these students doing here?’
And the Zen Master replies,
‘Nothing.’
When the student defines himself ready to learn, then the Zen Master asks,
‘Who you are before your mother and father conceived you?’
The student opens his mouth, and the Zen Master says,
‘Uh-oh, you are not ready yet.
I don’t want to be told, I want you to show me.’
The Zen Master takes the student to the senior student, who asks the new student to sit down and be still, ready to meditate, in other words ‘to do nothing’ without sleeping or getting into a trance whilst being wide awake, but not thinking.
A monk walks up and down with a flat stick, and if you start drifting away he will hit you with the stick. Out of the state of doing profoundly ‘nothing’, you will be able to say who you really are. So you can express who you really are without the slightest deception.
The Zen Master all along is referring to ‘nothing’ as in ‘no-thingness’ or Shunyata in Sanskrit. They are cultivating the art of ‘no-thingness’ so the students can reveal their True Authentic Highest Self or Original Truth.
Peace, respect and love,
Lak
